An executive at Lowe's is apologizing after claiming a cordless drill is "perfect" for Hispanic customers with small hands. Executive VP of stores, Joe McFarland, touted a $99 DeWalt 12-volt cordless drill in a pre-recorded video shown to Lowe's employees across the country on Monday. "The thing is compact. It fits anywhere," said McFarland, seen in a camouflage vest. "Some of our Hispanic pros with smaller hands, this is perfect for them." "Everybody in the room was just like, 'What? Did he just say that?'" a Lowe's assistant manager tells the Washington Post, which notes employees also voiced concerns in online forums. One described the comment as "unacceptable and degrading."
"Our associates shared how my statement was harmful and inappropriate. This is a key reflection moment for me," McFarland said Tuesday, apologizing for the "careless and ignorant comment." He said he takes "full responsibility" and will work with associates and customers to "learn and grow." Still, one Lowe's employee who noticed the video did not appear on the company's internal website as normal expected the employer to speak out. "They know it was wrong but haven't addressed it to the employees, so it makes me feel like they are trying to sweep it under the rug," the person tells the Post.
