After a "Good Samaritan" brought a dog to a veterinary clinic in Ohio earlier this month, saying he had found her on the side of a road with her throat cut and muzzle duct-taped shut, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones vowed to "work diligently to find who did this and seek justice." On Monday, the sheriff's office revealed that the person who claimed to have found the dog in Middletown, south of Dayton, was actually her owner—and he had not been telling the truth about her injuries, CNN reports. The sheriff's office says the dog, which authorities named Dani, had injured her throat on a barbed wire fence and the owner concocted the story of finding her by the road in an attempt to get free veterinary care.
Authorities say the owner, who told police he couldn't afford vet bills, also lied about the duct tape. "The snout/mouth area that appeared to be injured was due to the owners keeping the canine muzzled for several hours a day due to it chewing up items in their residence and being aggressive towards their other canine," the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post. Authorities say a microchip was found inside Dani after she was brought to the clinic. The office said it had determined that the incident did not occur in Butler County, "but we will make a joint effort to work with the adjacent jurisdiction to ensure this case is dealt with appropriately," Fox 8 reports. The sheriff's office said Saturday that it had received inquiries about adopting Dani, but it was "concentrating on getting her better right now."
