Imagine lying in a car trunk when it's 85 degrees out. That was apparently the fate of a Florida woman's dog Wednesday after the Brevard County Humane Society wouldn't euthanize the animal and had no room to shelter it, Fox 35 Orlando reports. Bystanders in the small city of Cocoa say they saw the woman, Sara Ann Perry, push the sickly dog into her car trunk in the humane society parking lot. "This thing just blows my mind," says eyewitness Tanya St. John. "I couldn't even sleep last night because I kept thinking about that dog. I kept thinking if she gets rear ended in that car, that is gonna kill that dog." Bystander video of the dog being put in the trunk has now gone viral.
Perry was arrested at home Thursday and charged with felony animal abuse, per WESH2. Sadly the dog, Neptune, was found in an emaciated and weakened condition. "If you harm an animal in Brevard county, we’re going to put your butt straight in jail," said Sheriff Wayne Ivey. "The abuse of this innocent pet makes absolutely no sense and can only be attributed to someone who has zero compassion for animals, and quite frankly, shouldn't be allowed to even own a plant, much less a pet." On the brighter side, ClickOrlando reports that Neptune is expected to fully recover and find a new home. Perry has been released after posting bond. (More Florida stories.)
