Joe Biden has bounced back from his debate squabble with Kamala Harris, who is now floundering, according to a new CNN poll. With the support of 29% of potential Democratic voters, up 7 points since late June, Biden regains a double-digit lead over Bernie Sanders (15%) and Elizabeth Warren (14%), who've held steady since early summer. Harris might wish she were in that boat. Support for the California senator fell to 5% from 17% following the first round of debates in June, putting her back where she was pre-debate. Pete Buttigieg also nabbed 5% support, while Beto O'Rourke had 3%, per Politico. Julián Castro counts a win, though he polled worse at 2%, as it means he now qualifies for the third Democratic debate, set for Sept. 12 in Houston.
Candidates need 2% support in four national polls, plus at least 130,000 small donors by Aug. 28. With 2% support of her own, Tulsi Gabbard is now two polls away from securing her spot. Tom Steyer, at 1% support, remains one poll away. Biden, Sanders, Warren, Harris, Buttigieg, O'Rourke, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, and Andrew Yang have already qualified, per the Hill. In the new CNN poll, Biden is favored by older, conservative Democrats, and by more than a third of the 54% of potential Democratic voters who said choosing a candidate with a strong likelihood of defeating President Trump was their top priority, per USA Today.
