Trump Calls for Apology From Women as Democrats Fire Back

President Trump resumed his campaign against four Democratic House members of color on Sunday morning, saying, "I don’t believe the four Congresswomen are capable of loving our Country." His tweet said, "They should apologize to America (and Israel) for the horrible (hateful) things they have said." The president's call last Sunday for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Ayanna Pressley to "go back" to their countries launched a series of reactions. The congresswomen held a press conference in response. The House passed a resolution condemning his "racist comments," per the Independent. A Trump rally included chants of "Send her back," and the president has sent contradicting messages about whether he supported it, while criticizing media coverage. Trump has renewed his attacks regularly, tweeting Sunday that "They are destroying the Democrat Party, but are weak & insecure people who can never destroy our great Nation!"

White House aides defended Trump on the Sunday talk shows, per the Washington Post. Stephen Miller said the charge of "racist" is used to silence people. "These four congresswomen detest America as it is currently constructed," Miller said on Fox News Sunday. Democrats spoke of the harm they see his attacks as doing. On CNN's State of the Union, Cory Booker said, "We have a demagogue, fearmongering person who is using race to divide." Rep. Elijah Cummings said he heard "Go home" chants when he helped integrate a swimming pool long ago. "What it does when the president does these things, it brings up the same feelings I had over 50-some years ago," he said. "It's very, very painful, it’s extremely divisive." Cummings urged Trump to instead be a role model children can look up to. (Trump called the rally chanters "patriots.")
