Detective Accused of Raping Girl Who Sought Police Help
Neil David Kimball.   (Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department)

This time, Neil David Kimball is likely going to prison. Accused of raping a teenage girl, the veteran LA detective pleaded guilty last week to lighter charges that should trigger a three-year sentence—after he skirted charges on two earlier allegations, the New York Times reports. The Ventura County district attorney says in a statement that Kimball, 46, assaulted a 15-year-old whose alleged sexual assault he was supposed to investigate. Originally accused of raping her by force while she was bound or tied, Kimball pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse and a lewd act with a child. Now the media is revisiting other Kimball accusations and asking how he managed to keep his job investigating sex crimes.

Only last month, Los Angeles fashion designer Sara Abusheikh wrote a Medium post saying Kimball was assigned her sexual assault case but didn't investigate and made suggestive remarks. "His only interest in the details of my rape came in the form of perverse, sick questions, and he—most tellingly—suggested he come inside to get high," wrote Abusheikh. She reported his behavior but was apparently brushed off by the LA County district attorney's office. Kimball was also investigated (but never charged) for allegedly getting women to undress and slip into a bathtub while he investigated a sexual-battery case in 2009. Oxygen reports that the former Special Victims Bureau detective is expected to be sentenced Aug. 8. (A massive database of police misconduct cases was recently developed.)
