What should've been a joyous holiday week for Makayla Winston's family, complete with a baby due July 4, is now one marked by grief. Police in Holmes County, Miss., say that the body of Winston, who was nine months pregnant, was found Monday just south of Lexington, CNN reports. Holmes County Sheriff Willie March tells People that the body of the 21-year-old was discovered about five miles from where Winston's car was found Friday, one day after she was last seen. The keys were in the ignition and her cellphone was lying in the grass nearby, March tells WLBT, noting that someone who initially spotted her car also saw what looked like a white SUV parked behind it.
It appears the phone left behind had been scrubbed of its texts, March tells WREG. Winston's mother, Yvetty Brown, last saw her daughter in her parked car Thursday night, about to head out "to show the sonogram to the baby's father," Brown says. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has interviewed multiple people, and officials now suspect foul play. "She loved this baby she was carrying," Winston's aunt tells WAPT. "She loved a man, this baby's daddy. She was a happy young one." March says Winston's body will be sent to the state crime lab to find out the cause of death. (More missing woman stories.)
