Former Super Bowl hero Mark Rypien has been arrested in Washington state on suspicion of domestic violence, per the AP. Police say Rypien faces a charge of fourth-degree assault. The 56-year-old was processed at the Spokane County Jail around 6:30pm Sunday and was awaiting a court appearance Monday. Rypien announced last year he believes he has chronic traumatic encephalopathy, caused by repeated concussions while playing in the NFL. He believes this condition has caused him to have erratic and violent behavior, as well as depression. He was a lead plaintiff among 4,500 former players who won a settlement related to CTE in 2013.
Local station KHQ reports that Rypien was arrested while standing near a Spokane bank, with his wife lying nearby in the grass. A medical crew evaluated her for about five minutes and determined she didn't need medical attention. The Spokesman-Review notes that the couple was involved in a 2017 domestic violence incident that resulted in Rypien's wife being arrested, though the charges were eventually dropped. In 1992, Rypien led the Washington Redskins to victory over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI, and he was named the game's MVP.
