They're known only as "Boy A" and "Boy B" to the public, and the 14-year-olds on Tuesday became the youngest murder convicts in Ireland's history. Both were 13 at the time of last year's attack on 14-year-old Ana Krieger, reports the New York Times. Prosecutors laid out what happened: Boy B went to Ana's home in the Dublin suburb of Lucan and got her to take a walk with him on the pretext of meeting up with Boy A, whom she liked. They went to an abandoned house, where Boy A then brutally assaulted the girl, first raping her and then killing her. Prosecutors say Boy B watched as the attack took place. It's believed she was dead within 45 minutes of leaving home, reports CNN. Both teens will be sentenced next month, and while those convicted of murder in Ireland get life sentences, juveniles can see more lenient treatment.
Prosecutors say it's clear the attack was premeditated. For example, they discovered a homemade "zombie" mask inside a backpack in Boy A's room with Ana's blood on it, reports the Irish Times. The backpack also contained gloves, a scarf, and kneepads, which prosecutors said amounted to a "murder kit." Boy A was later seen walking home in a park with blood on his clothes, and he made up a story about being jumped. He even went to police headquarters to give a description, and police spent time searching for his supposed attackers. Ana's naked body wasn't discovered until a few days later. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and neck, and police found concrete blocks and a bloody stick near her body, which displayed more than 50 areas of injury.
