Pete Buttigieg seemingly came out of nowhere when he entered the 2020 race, and Politico points to a new development as evidence of his "explosive rise" since. When the mayor from South Bend, Ind., first jumped into the presidential fray, he raised $7 million during his first three months in the race, a figure the Week calls "intimidating," considering his virtually unknown status. Now his haul for April, which hadn't been announced previously, is making headlines: another $7 million. "If you want to show you've got any shot at this, then you need to be growing," a veteran Democratic fundraiser tells Politico. "And he's clearly showing signs that he's expanding."
Buttigieg has nearly two dozen more fundraisers around the country set before the end of the month, with another fundraising pro noting his cash-culling abilities have now put him "firmly" in the top tier of presidential candidates. Still, Politico notes it's not clear yet how other candidates have been pacing for the second quarter on the fundraising front, noting Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and others have the potential to announce big numbers. Meanwhile, Buttigieg made news for another reason: The gay candidate tells Axios on HBO that he is "almost certain" the US has had gay presidents, per USA Today.
