Just when you thought we'd reached Peak Baby Shark, Nickelodeon has come up with yet another way to make sure you're never able to get the song out of your head. The network is developing an animated series based on the tune, though there's no word yet on episode count or premiere date, per Deadline. For those without young children in their house, a primer: "Baby Shark" has long been a popular chant at summer camps, youth groups, and the like, as Fatherly and Vulture explained earlier this year. It had been put on YouTube multiple times before going viral—even making its way to Europe—but in 2015, South Korean educational company Pinkfong created this version of the song, and in the three years it's been on YouTube, it's accumulated nearly 3 billion views. It really started picking up steam this year, making it to No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Pinkfong has since released Baby Shark toys, and now its parent company is collaborating with Nickelodeon on the series, per the Hollywood Reporter. "Baby Shark has captured the imagination of millions of fans around the world, so it’s no surprise it’s one of the top 10 most-viewed videos on YouTube ever," says a Nickelodeon Animation exec in a statement. "At the heart of any popular piece of content is a terrific character, and we have a great opportunity to further explore the world of Baby Shark and follow this family through some great animated adventures on Nickelodeon." (The network also recently launched a series featuring Ryan, the highest-paid YouTube star.)
