President Trump and Theresa May held a joint news conference Tuesday on the second day of Trump's UK visit, and three main topics were generating headlines: Mexico tariffs, Brexit, and the anti-Trump protests. Highlights:

  • Brexit: May was defending her Brexit negotiations, and she recalled that Trump once advised her to sue the European Union. She declined, and she said Tuesday she got a better deal as a result. Responded Trump: "I would have sued, but that's OK," drawing audience chuckles, per NPR. "She's probably a better negotiator than I am." He added that he believed Brexit would indeed happen and said to May (who is leaving her post over the controversy): "Perhaps you won't be given the credit that you deserve, if they do something. But I think you deserve a lot of credit. I really do."

  • Tariffs: Trump said that he thinks tariffs on Mexico will happen and that it would be "foolish" of Republicans to try to limit his power to impose them, reports the Hill. “I don’t think they will do that," he said. "I think if they do, it’s foolish.” It's still possible Mexico will convince Trump to hold off, but he said he hasn't seen enough progress on border issues yet. “We are going to see if we can do something, but I think it’s more likely that the tariffs go on,” he said.
  • Protests: Trump downplayed the anti-Trump protests taking place in London, complete with a blimp of "baby Trump." Said the president, per the Washington Post: “Even coming over today, there were thousands of people cheering, and then I heard that there were protests. I said, ‘Where are the protests? I don’t see any protests.’ I did see a small protest today when I came. Very small. So a lot of it is fake news, I hate to say.” USA Today reports that police barriers have kept the protests largely out of the president's view.
(Speaking of "baby Trump," it might be headed to a museum.)
