President Trump, who has said he could well be facing Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, has more reason to think that now. A new poll shows Biden with a major lead on the Democratic side. Trump will be buoyed, as well, by poll results that show a rise in his job approval rating.
- Biden: A Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey this week found Biden running nearly 20 points ahead of the Democrat in second place, Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Hill reports. And 36% of Democratic respondents said Biden is the candidate they'd be most likely to support for the nomination. The field was rounded out by Sen. Kamala Harris in third place, with 8% support, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Mayor Pete Buttigieg tied at 5%. "Biden, Harris, and Sanders, are emerging from the pack," said Mark Penn, co-director of the poll. As for Biden, Penn says the former vice president "continues to have a strong position but will need to grow to win it." The online survey involved 1,536 registered voters, 352 of whom self-identified as Democrats and were asked about the party's primary race.
- Trump: Voter optimism about the economy helped push Trump's approval rating to its highest point in two years. A Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey shows 48% of respondents approve of the job the president is doing, up from 45% in March, and 52% disapprove, per the Hill. Trump's approval rating hadn't been at 48% in the survey since June 2017. His handling of the economic issues appeared behind the improvement; a record 62% approve of his approach to employment and 59% approve of his handling of the economy, while Trump's "actions on other issues like China and immigration are neutral to positive," Penn says.The online survey, taken this week, involved 1,295 registered voters.
