Your submarine ride-share awaits in Queensland, Australia. Thanks to Uber, what's touted as the world's first submarine ride-share launches Monday, offering users a one-hour submarine tour of the Great Barrier Reef, as well as free pickup and a return helicopter or pontoon trip, per CNN. The "once-in-a-lifetime experience" taken from Heron Island off the coast of Gladstone initially, and from Agincourt Reef off the coast of Cairns after June 9, was "the most desired future travel experience sought by visitors" in a 2018 survey, CEO Leanne Coddington of Tourism and Events Queensland says, per Newsweek.
"ScUber makes this wish a reality and reaffirms Queensland tourism's commitment to providing locals and visitors alike with truly remarkable ways to explore nature's wonderland," says Coddington. The experience, booked through the Uber app until June 18, isn't accessible to all. Not only is space limited, but it costs roughly $2,000 for two riders. For every dollar spent, Uber will donate $1 to Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef for conservation efforts. That said, a contest winner from the US, Canada, UK, France, New Zealand, or Australia will get two tickets to ride for free, in addition to airfare and hotel accommodations. (More Uber stories.)
