A transgender woman who survived a brutal attack last month has been found shot to death in Dallas. Police say Muhlaysia Booker, 23, was found early Saturday on a city street, reports NBC DFW. Authorities have no suspects and say they have no evidence to link the fatal shooting to last month's high-profile assault, which took place after a minor traffic accident. In the April attack, Booker said she backed into a man's car in a parking lot and he pulled a gun on her. A crowd gathered, and video shows Booker being repeatedly punched and kicked. She suffered a broken wrist and a concussion.
"This time, I can stand before you, where in other scenarios, we're at a memorial," Booker said at a rally a week after the assault, per Dallas News. Police charged Edward Thomas, 29, after the beating, and have been trying to identify other suspects. They were also investigating whether the assailants shouted derogatory slurs, which could lead to hate-crime charges. "There is nothing at this time to connect Mr. Edward Thomas and the offense that occurred yesterday," said a Dallas police official, referring to the murder, per CNN. (More Dallas stories.)
