At an April 29 sentencing hearing, convicted bank robber Jamie Frierson pleaded for leniency, saying he was dying of colon cancer and wanted to spend the little time he has left with his family. He was released after being sentenced to time served—and he robbed a bank nine days later, police say. The 49-year-old, nicknamed the "Broadway Bandit" after robbing seven banks in the area in a 2017 crime spree, is accused of robbing an Apple Bank in the Bronx on May 8, the New York Daily News reports. Prosecutors say he made off with $200 after handing the teller a note saying he was armed. Police say Frierson is suspected of a similar robbery at another Apple Bank the next day.
"After being released from federal prison for robbing banks, Jamie Frierson allegedly went right back to the very crime that put him in jail in the first place," FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr. said in a statement. "He clearly did not learn a lesson." Frierson is now in police custody at Lincoln Hospital. At last month's sentencing hearing, where he could have faced a 17-year sentence under federal guidelines, Frierson pleaded for mercy, saying he had lost 60 pounds in the space of three months. "When you are at the end of your life, certain things become important to you that weren’t important to you before, like your family," he said.
