A man holds a dog upside down as another shoots beer from a keg into its mouth. "Let's go!" voices shout as laughter erupts. Yet there were plenty who weren't amused by the 5-second Snapchat video filmed Saturday at an off-campus fraternity of Long Island's Hofstra University. "So apparently it's okay to force dogs to drink beer even though it can kill them????" reads a typical comment on Twitter, where the video has been viewed more than 100,000 times. The video was initially posted by a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi frat, which has now been suspended while the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals investigates, per NBC News. The SPCA said the 10-month-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel was found safe and healthy at the frat house Monday, per News 12.
Still, the 21-year-old owner featured in the video was ordered to take the dog for blood work and other veterinary exams. Per News 12, the owner—who is no longer living at the frat house—instead signed the dog over to the SPCA, which will work with the district attorney to determine if charges will be filed. SPCA detective Gary Rogers describes possible charges of animal torture and failure to provide adequate sustenance, though CBS New York notes the dog will be returned to its owner. Calling the conduct "unacceptable," the university adds a range of disciplinary actions is possible. According to a frat spokesman, "we hope that we are able to use this as a teaching moment to help build better young men who are committed to our policies."
