A 16-year-old died on a Boy Scout hike in Arizona after the group ran out of water. The group hiked the 1,500-foot Picacho Peak last Saturday, officials said, and drank the last of its water at the top, the Arizona Republic reports. The boy reportedly showed signs of dehydration on the way down from the mountain. Emergency responders were called but were unable to revive the teenager, whose name was not released. At the time, the temperature was above 90 degrees.
A Pinal County sheriff's spokeswoman said Friday that the death is being investigated, per the Daily Star, but charges aren’t expected. The group included two adults. "We offer our sincerest condolences to his family, and we will support them in any way that we can," said Andy Price, chief executive of the local scouting organization, adding, "This is a very difficult time for our Scouting family." (Dehydration can affect cognitive function.)
