Wayne LaPierre says he was recently made "an offer I couldn't refuse"—but "I refused it." Per the Wall Street Journal, the CEO and executive vice president of the National Rifle Association delivered a stunning letter to the NRA's board Thursday, one that revealed what LaPierre says is a "threat meant to intimidate and divide us." That threat, he alleges, is an attempt by NRA President Oliver North—along with Ackerman McQueen, one of the association's vendors—to force LaPierre to step down from his role with the group or face "destructive allegations made against me and the NRA." In his letter, LaPierre contends North called one of his senior staff members on Wednesday and said that Ackerman McQueen had a letter on the ready that would be "bad" for LaPierre, the NRA, and two members of LaPierre's executive team.
LaPierre says his staff member was told the letter from Ackerman McQueen—an ad agency with "contractual and financial loyalties" to North, and which has been sued by the NRA for not serving up records to justify its billings—would contain "a devastating account of our financial status, sexual harassment charges against a staff member, accusations of wardrobe expenses, and excessive staff travel expenses." "North explained that the letter would not be sent" to the NRA's board, LaPierre writes, "if I were to promptly resign as your executive vice president." LaPierre adds that North said if LaPierre continued to boost North as NRA president, North would "negotiate" an "excellent retirement" package for LaPierre. Sources tell the Journal LaPierre's letter is an "angry reaction" to a previous letter North had sent to the NRA board's executive committee outlining more than $200,000 used on wardrobe by LaPierre and charged to a vendor.
