More Bad News for Baltimore's Self-Publishing Mayor

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh remained on paid leave Thursday following a bout of pneumonia, while FBI agents were hard at work. A spokesman confirms agents from the Baltimore FBI office and Washington IRS office raided City Hall, two homes owned by Pugh, and the office of her attorney early Thursday, per the Baltimore Sun. Agents were also seen at the site of the Maryland Center for Adult Training, which Pugh formerly led, and at the home of former aide Gary Brown Jr., who's a board member of the nonprofit.

Pugh is under investigation for sales of her self-published "Healthy Holly" children's books. The Sun previously reported the University of Maryland Medical System paid $500,000 for 100,000 books while Pugh held an unpaid position on its board. She has since resigned and returned $100,000, per CNN. But hundreds of thousands of dollars more allegedly came in book sales to entities with business before the city, per the Sun. Councilman Brandon Scott, a Democrat like Pugh, called for the 69-year-old to resign as the raids were carried out. (More Baltimore stories.)
