Tragedy struck Okinawa on Saturday morning when a US Navy sailor apparently used a knife to kill a woman and then take his own life, CNN reports. The bodies were found in a bloody bedroom on the Japanese island. "This is an absolute tragedy and we are fully committed to supporting the investigation into the incident," says the III Marine Expeditionary Force. The sailor, who remains unidentified, was attached to the III Marine Division, per Stars and Stripes. He was seemingly in a relationship with the woman, who was in her 40s and is also unidentified.

The killing comes at a time of rising resentment over US troops stationed in Japan's southwestern region, the AP reports. Okinawa takes up less than 1% of Japan but hosts roughly half of America's 54,000 troops stationed in the country. Okinawa's governor has been trying to get the Marine Corps air station taken off the island entirely. Japan's Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Takeo Akiba phoned America's ambassador to Japan, William Hagerty, seeking cooperation in the probe and expressing his "extreme regrets," per Japan's Foreign Ministry. (A former corporate raider and his wife were just found dead in their bed.)
