Looks like Gambino crime boss Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali was killed by a local guy in a dispute over a woman, the New York Post reports. Sources say Anthony Comello, arrested Saturday, was upset the mafioso barred him from seeing a woman in Cali's family—maybe his niece, who was home at the time. So the 24-year-old allegedly drove over Wednesday and smashed into Gambino's Escalade. When Cali, 53, came outside, Comello handed him a fallen license plate and shot him about 10 times with a 9-millimeter pistol, authorities tell the New York Times. Cali's home security camera apparently caught the whole thing and Comello's fingerprints are on the license plate. "This went from the perfect crime to amateur hour," says a law-enforcement source.
"Anthony Comello will go down in the record books as being one of the dumbest killers in New York City history, if not in the US and the world," the source adds. "Not to mention that the victim was the head of the Gambino crime family." Which hardly matches the local word on Comello, who worked construction jobs, lived with his parents, plowed a neighbor's snow, and said "hi" on the street. Only complaints are that he shot fireworks late at night and "was a little bit aggressive," per a local deli worker, "a little loud." Meanwhile, CNN notes the murder weapon hasn't been recovered and NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea is urging caution: "The investigation is far ... from over," he says, adding that it "will turn to were other parties involved in this."
