Ivanka Trump isn't so keen on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal, and her thoughts on the subject have been quickly picked apart and mocked. In an interview with Fox News' Steve Hilton that MarketWatch reports will air Sunday, Trump was asked what she would say to people who "will see that offer ... 'here's the guarantee of a job,' and think, 'yeah, that's what I want, it's that simple.'" ThinkProgress adds a little context, explaining the Green New Deal proposal addresses inequality by including a job-guarantee program that would ensure workers earn a living wage. Trump's response and the fiery reaction to it:

  • "I don't think most Americans, in their heart, want to be given something," said Trump. "I've spent a lot of time traveling around this country over the last 4 years. People want to work for what they get. So, I think that this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want. They want the ability to be able to secure a job. They want the ability to live in a country where’s there’s the potential for upward mobility."

  • Twitter and various media outlets were quick to point out Trump hasn't exactly worked for every dime she's made, and that much of her career has been spent under the employ of her father. ThinkProgress' take: "Although Trump insinuated that a living wage is a handout, she and her husband have made millions simply for breathing." Among the examples it provides: In 2017, her holdings in the Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC, brought her almost $4 million.
  • Another stat, this one tweeted by AJ+ in response to her claim that "most people" don't want a guaranteed minimum: "According to the Pew Research Center, 58% of Americans support raising the federal minimum wage, currently $7.25/hour, to $15/hour."
  • Among the many Twitter responses, one from Padma Lakshmi: "Actually a lot of people would like a fair living wage & financial security for their families. 'Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps' is, and has always been, a conservative fairytale meant to keep the working class down and allow the rich to keep profiting off of them."
  • A more sarcastic take from Splinter: "Maybe Ivanka truly has had a change of heart, and now genuinely believes that unearned wealth is a bad thing. If that’s the case, I sincerely look forward to watching the eldest Trump daughter empty her bank accounts, change her last name, and strike out on her own as the dedicated individualist she believes she can be. That’s the American way, right?"
  • NBC News notes Ocasio-Cortez has yet to comment.
