Karl Marx's grave "will never be the same again" after a vandal went at it with a hammer, according to the charity that maintains the memorial in London. Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust says Marx's name was specifically targeted on the original 1883 marble plaque from his gravestone, which was incorporated into a larger monument erected in 1954; it also bears the names of family members, including Marx's wife. "We will repair as far as possible," but the monument "will bear those battle scars for the future," the trust says, per the Guardian. See the damage here.
"Regardless of what anyone thinks about Marx's philosophy, I just think it is an appalling thing to do," adds trust CEO Ian Dungavell. "The person has really done their best to obliterate Karl Marx's name," he says, noting no other damage was found at Highgate Cemetery after police were called Monday. It's not the first time vandals have targeted the grave of the German philosopher known for works like The Communist Manifesto.
