Lock of Washington's Hair as 'Hefty' as Its Price

Someone just paid thousands of dollars per strand of George Washington's hair. A bidder nabbed the "hefty" lock of hair from America's first president for $35,764 in a Lelands auction that closed Friday, per USA Today. The gavel fell at more than three times the expected price, per Fox News. More than 5 inches long, the strands tied with string came from the family of Washington ally Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton's third son, James A. Hamilton, included the "lock of the Illustrious Washington" in an autographed note sent to a New York woman in 1870 "as a mark of my respect and regard." It was sold as it sat for the last 150 years, fixed to a card with sealing wax. (Another lock of Washington's hair turned up in a library book.)
