A young mother from Connecticut who went to New York City for a shopping trip died in what the Metropolitan Transportation Authority calls an "absolutely heartbreaking incident." Malaysia Goodson, 22, fell down the stairs of the 7th Avenue subway station while carrying her 1-year-old daughter, a stroller, and shopping bags. Police say Goodson was found unresponsive on the platform around 8pm Monday and was pronounced dead in the hospital, the Guardian reports. Her daughter was not seriously injured. NYPD spokesman Lt. Paul Ng says Goodson was carrying her daughter in her arms, though some reports say that the girl was in the stroller, reports the Washington Post.
While it's not clear whether Goodson was killed by the fall or had a medical issue, the death has put the spotlight on accessibility in the city's subway system, where only a quarter of the 472 stations have elevators, many of which are out of service at any given time, the AP reports. "This is a heartbreaking tragedy that never should have happened," tweeted Mayor Bill de Blasio. "The subway system is not accessible for everyone and that’s an environment the MTA should not allow." Andy Byford, who became president of New York City Transit last year, has pledged to make at least 50 more stations accessible, but the "Fast Forward" plan has not been funded, the New York Times reports.
