The CEO of an Arizona healthcare company stepped down Monday following reports that a woman in a vegetative state had given birth at a long-term care facility in Phoenix. Hacienda HealthCare's board of directors said in a statement that it had unanimously accepted the resignation of Bill Timmons, the Arizona Republic reports. Timmons, the company's longtime CEO, became the company's president Jan. 1, but ended up spending just days in the role. Board member Gary Orman said the company "will accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation, an unprecedented case that has devastated everyone involved, from the victim and her family to Hacienda staff at every level of our organization."
The woman, who has not been identified, had been at the facility for around 10 years following a near-drowning, NBC reports. Staff had been unaware she was pregnant before she gave birth to a baby boy Dec. 29. The Phoenix Police Department is investigating the case and the Arizona Department of Health Services says it has carried out a welfare check on every resident at the facility. Orman said the company is doing all it can to cooperate with police and investigating agencies "at all levels in every way possible." The New York Times reports that investigators have expressed concerns with the facility in the past, including in 2013, when a male staffer was fired after making sexually explicit remarks about patients.
