Sanders: Trump's Threat Is No Joke

The government shuttered, for months or even years? So said President Trump, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders backed him up Sunday: "Absolutely—the president means what he says when he says that," she said on Fox News Sunday, per Fox News. She also criticized Democrats for opposing the border wall while saying they support border security. But she ran into trouble with host Chris Wallace when claiming that "nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists come into our country illegally, and we know that our most vulnerable point of entry is at our southern border." Wallace noted that most suspects are nabbed at airports, and the State Department finds no evidence of terrorists crossing on the US-Mexico border. "Not always," said Sanders, who still insisted they come by "air," "land," and "sea": "It's all of the above," she said. For more Sunday political talk:

  • Wall money: "I am not going to give wall money just to give wall money,” said Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala) on CNN's State of the Union, per Politico. "What I would like to see is the plan about how that money is going to be spent, where it's going to be spent."
  • National emergency: "He'll face a challenge," said Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill) on CBS' Face the Nation about Trump's claim that he might declare a national emergency, per CBS News. "I don't know what he’s basing this on, but he's faced so many lawsuits when he ignores the law and ignores tradition and precedent, and just goes forward without any concern."
  • "Radical left": "We're negotiating with people who will ... accuse all of us who support a wall as part of border security as racists," said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Face the Nation, per CBS News. "As long as the radical left is in charge, we're not going to get anywhere."
  • President who? "I have no idea," said Mick Mulvaney on State of the Union when asked about Trump's claim that previous presidents have told him they wished they had built a border wall, per Talking Points Memo. "I haven't asked the president that question."
  • Potty mouths: Trump "is not in a position to talk about language," said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif) on State of the Union regarding a vulgarity used by a Democratic congresswoman, per the Hill. "I'm in a unique position to say this, considering the president turned my name into a profanity." Indeed, Trump has insulted him.
  • Impeachment: "The gravity of that word is too big and too important to just throw it around," said Rep Jahana Hayes (D-Conn) on Face the Nation of impeachment talk in the House, per CBS News.
(Meanwhile, Trump says "you'd be at war right now" if not for him.)
