The Dark Overlord strikes again—this time, exploiting 9/11 conspiracy theories to blackmail its victims. The hacker group announced Monday it had stolen 9/11-related documents and would reveal them if ransom demands were ignored, Motherboard reports. The hackers claim to have breached legal firms and insurers, specifically naming Silverstein Properties, Hiscox Syndicates Ltd, and Lloyds of London. "Hiscox Syndicates Ltd and Lloyds of London are some of the biggest insurers on the planet ... [and] even insured structures such as the World Trade Centers," reads the announcement, published on Pastebin. "Pay," they say, "or we're going to bury you with this. If you continue to fail us, we'll escalate these releases by releasing the keys, each time a Layer is opened, a new wave of liability will fall upon you."
"We'll be providing many answers about 9.11 conspiracies through our 18.000 secret documents leak," the hacker group tweeted. The group welcomes anyone involved in 9/11 litigation, including politicians and law enforcement agencies, to pay to have its documents "withdrawn from any eventual public release"; terrorist groups like ISIS or "a competing nation-state of the USA such as China or Russia" are also invited to buy documents, Alternet reports. The hackers released a small sample that appears "fairly innocuous," per Motherboard. The Hiscox group confirms that a law firm under its employ has been hacked, likely of 9/11-related documents. The Dark Overlord has targeted other businesses before, including medical centers and a production studio, and used media reports to pressure its victims. (More hackers stories.)
