Kellyanne Conway may have cleared up whether President Trump knows acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker—after Trump called Whitaker "a great guy" in October, made him acting AG last week, and claimed not to know him Friday, the Washington Post reports. "The president does know Matt Whitaker, has gotten to know him over the course of the last year, since he has been the chief of staff to the attorney general," says Conway on Fox News Sunday. Trump was only emphasizing Friday that Whitaker isn't "a friend there who he's known his entire life," Conway explains. For more around the Sunday dial, including an accusation by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi:
- The Acosta video: "He either put his hands on her and grabbed the mic [from] her or he did not and he clearly did," Conway says of the much-ballyhooed video showing CNN reporter Jim Acosta resisting the mic-grab of an administration intern, per Rolling Stone. "...Well that's not altered. That's sped up. They do it all the time in sports to see if there's actually a first down or a touchdown."
- Mueller protection: "We had a bill come through the Judiciary Committee that tried to make it impossible for a special counsel to be removed," says Sen. Ted Cruz on CBS' Face the Nation about possible legislation to protect the Mueller probe, per CBS News. "I believe that legislation was unconstitutional."
- More Mueller: "I don't think he has to recuse himself," says Sen. Lindsey Graham on Face the Nation about Whitaker and the Mueller probe, per CBS News. "I am confident the Mueller investigation will be allowed to come to a good, solid conclusion..."
- Even more: Democrats "will attempt to add to must-pass legislation, in this case the spending bill, legislation that would prevent Mr. Whitaker from interfering with the Mueller investigation" if Whitaker doesn't recuse himself, says Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on CNN's State of the Union, per CNN.
- Florida Senate race: "Sen. [Bill] Nelson is clearly trying to commit fraud to win this election," says Florida GOP Senate candidate Rick Scott of his opponent, per Fox News. Nelson has filed two lawsuits against Florida election officials alleging fraud.
- More Florida: "My experience with the president is that any time he charges somebody with something, he's just projecting what he might have done himself," says Pelosi on Face the Nation about Trump's charge of Florida-recount fraud, per the Hill. "No, there is no election fraud."
- Fire funding: "I don't think it's appropriate to threaten funding," says Sen. Cory Gardner on NBC's Meet the Press of Trump's threat to pull federal funding if California can't prevent wildfires, per NBC News. "That's not going to happen. Funding will be available."
- Subpoena power: "I’m not going to be handing out subpoenas like somebody's handing out candy on Halloween," says Rep. Elijah Cummings on ABC's This Week about House Dems investigating the Trump administration, per Politico.
