All eyes are on the 2018 midterms—or, most of them. Recode's Kara Swisher brought up the 2020 election with Hillary Clinton during a Friday night Q&A, and Clinton's answer is generating headlines like the Hill's: "Hillary Clinton leaves door open for 2020 run." The Washington Post's headline calls out her "mixed signals," and this is likely why: When asked if she wanted to run again, she immediately replied no, paused, and said no again. Swisher called out the pauses, and this was Clinton's next sentence: "Well, I'd like to be president." And then she went on to seemingly make a case for her being in the Oval Office:
- "I think, hopefully, when we have a Democrat in the Oval Office in January of 2021, there’s going to be so much work to be done. I mean we have confused everybody in the world, including ourselves. We have confused our friends and our enemies. They have no idea what the United States stands for, what we're likely to do, what we think is important, so the work would be work that I feel very well prepared for having been at the Senate for eight years, having been a diplomat in the State Department, and it's just going to be a lot of heavy lifting."
Swisher then asked if Clinton planned to do any of that lifting. She replied that she wasn't going to think about it until after the midterms. (This move
fueled 2020 rumors about someone else.)
