The man Charlottesville police have charged with plowing his car into a group of counterprotesters at a white supremacist rally in August 2017 has been assaulted behind bars, reports the AP. James Alex Fields Jr., who has pleaded not guilty in the death of Heather Heyer, was being attended by staff at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail when Timothy Ray Brown Jr. dodged an officer and hit Fields "twice on the left side of his body above his shoulders," per a news release, which adds that "at no time did Inmate Fields have an opportunity to defend himself." A friend of Brown's tells the AP that he was a friend of Heyer, and that both were with her when the car plowed into the crowd. Jay Scott has started a GoFundMe page to raise money for a lawyer for Brown, who faces assault charges. (More James Alex Fields Jr. stories.)
