When Caitlyn Jenner first became part of what she calls the "valuable, vulnerable" LGBT community, she says she saw an opening in which to make inroads at changing more conservative people's views. And so she threw her support behind a newly elected President Trump—whom the former Olympian believed when he said he'd be an ally to the transgender community—hoping to "leverage my privilege for change." Her view now, per an op-ed in the Washington Post: "Sadly, I was wrong." Jenner points not only to the Trump administration's recent move to "preposterously and unscientifically" redefine what gender means, but also its attempts to ban transgender people from the military and roll back protections for transgender kids at school.

"This is politics at its worst," Jenner writes. "It is unacceptable, it is upsetting, and it has deeply, personally hurt me." Calling her hope in Trump "misplaced," Jenner now vows to do more listening and learning within the LGBT community and to redirect focus on the issues that affect the people within it, including homelessness, violence, mental health, and health care. "I do not support Trump," she now laments. "The world needs to hear us. The world needs to know us. We will not be erased." Read Jenner's full piece here.
