Video footage from a mountain trail that shows visitors throwing huge rocks off a precipice has stirred outrage in the Canada climbing community. The public became aware of the incident after video that recently appeared on Instagram before being taken down appeared to show hikers on Alberta's Mount Rundle as they threw chunks of rock down a cliff face on a popular Canmore trail, per CBC. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police became involved after the outcry from viewers who believed the people in the video were carelessly putting the lives of other climbers at risk.
According to CTV, the RCMP have made contact with those in the video. However, authorities said they have decided not to press charges because the individuals did not know what they were doing posed such a risk. Others said the video just goes to show that signs warning of the dire consequences of this sort of carelessness would make a big difference. Climbers in particular seemed the most concerned about the incident because it occurred where unseasoned hikers could cause serious injury to those scaling the cliffs below. One climber told CBC, "There could be a collaborative effort where we could get together and start putting signs on popular cliffs where there are multiple users, hikers and climbers."
