If Osama bin Laden wasn't dead, he would probably have been happy to give his blessing to the marriage of his youngest son. Relatives tell the Guardian that Hamza bin Laden has married the daughter of Mohamed Atta, the eldest of the 9/11 hijackers. Atta, an Egyptian citizen, flew American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Ahmad al-Attas, one of Osama bin Laden's half brothers, says the family doesn't know where the couple is living, but "it could be Afghanistan." Hamza bin Laden, 29, is believed to have risen through the ranks of al-Qaeda as he seeks revenge for the raid that killed his father and his brother Khalid.
The Obama administration slapped sanctions on Hamza bin Laden early last year, saying he was "actively engaged in terrorism." Bin Laden family members living in Saudi Arabia say they haven't been in contact with him. "When we thought everyone was over this, next thing I knew was Hamza saying I am going to avenge my father," Hassan al-Attas, another Osama half brother, tells the Guardian. "I don't want to go through that again." He adds: "If Hamza was in front of me now, I would tell him: 'God guide you. Think twice about what you are doing. Don't retake the steps of your father. You are entering really negative and horrible parts of your soul.'" (Osama bin Laden's mother says he was "a very good child" until he was "brainwashed" as a young man.)
