With warm weather comes the usual wave of summer blockbusters, but sometimes the best story is buried in a book. Entertainment Weekly lists 23 disappointing adaptations, including:

  1. The Da Vinci Code: An utter lack of chemistry between Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou and an uber-creepy Silas (Paul Bettany) made this sure thing a misfire.

  1. The Golden Compass: The effects delivered visual punch, but the adaptation reduced most of the religion-questioning undertones into family-friendly fluff.
  2. Memoirs of a Geisha: Despite the knockout cast, a hyper-Hollywood makeover stripped this rag-to-riches story of its authenticity.
  3. Troy: With a simplified plot and an unwavering focus on Brad Pitt’s bronzed pecs, this war story was more cartoon than classic.
