As the next edition of the New York Times Book Review goes to press, an era ends—books from author JK Rowling's Harry Potter series, for the first time in 10 years, are nowhere on the best-seller list.

The Potter series, a year after a quiet but critically acclaimed debut in 1998, so dominated the sales list that the Times created first a separate list for children’s books, and then for children’s book “series,” to clear the gridlock for other titles. (More Harry Potter stories.)
