Police in Florida say there would have been yet another headline about a child dying in a hot car if not for an alert passerby. Officers credit Jessica Kaiser with spotting the 8-month-old boy in a vehicle with the windows rolled up on a 93-degree day in Orange City, reports Fox News. Luckily, the vehicle apparently was not locked, and Kaiser and her husband opened a door and called 911. The boy is fine, but police video shows his mother returning to the vehicle 24 minutes after the 911 call was placed and learning that she had left the boy inside.
Meagan Burgess told officers she thought she had dropped him off with a relative along with her other children. "Is he OK?" a crying Burgess can be heard saying. She is informed that he is, and Kaiser gives her a hug. "We avoided a disaster," says Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood in the video he made to thank Kaiser. Burgess, meanwhile, faces child-neglect charges. (In Nashville, a father rushing to catch a flight forgot about his 1-year-old daughter in his vehicle.)
