A California toddler has died after authorities say he accidentally shot himself. The tragedy occurred in a Fresno neighborhood, where police arrived to a call Saturday. Per ABC 30, police said the boy's parent was not at home at the time, but that two adults were. Police said they have obtained a search warrant and were processing the scene in order to determine how the boy got his hands on the gun. Fresno police told KSEE the boy was in critical condition from a gunshot wound to the head when they arrived.

California law stipulates that firearms must be stored safely, such as with a cable lock, in areas where a child could be present. Criminal charges may be filed in instances where police determined safe storage has not occurred, per the state's Department of Justice website. In this specific case, Fresno PD said they are working to determine what, if any, charges would be filed. (More gun control stories.)
