Joey Chestnut brought the fireworks Wednesday, clinching not just his 11th victory at the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York also a new world record. The 34-year-old managed 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes, a full 11 more than the No. 2 finisher, Carmen Cincotti. The AP notes that bests the 72 Chestnut ate last year. The Mercury News digs into the San Jose resident's preparation and method: All he ate in the days prior to the contest was water with lemon, amino acids, and some caramels; he arrived in New York Thursday to get used to the humidity; and he volleyed back and forth between shoving two hot dogs and two buns into his mouth.

Chestnut walks with $10,000, as does female champ Miko Sudo, who managed 37 hot dogs. SBNation provides a list of some of Chestnut's other "absurd" records, among them: 4.375 three-pound apple pies in 8 minutes, 14.5 pounds of burritos in 10 minutes, 141 hard-boiled eggs in 10 minutes, 103 Krystal Burgers in 8 minutes, and 102 tamales in 10 minutes. Read the full list, which includes the calorie count and what each tally is equivalent to (in the case of the tamales, "11.4 days of food, according to the USDA").
