One minute a California woman was taking pictures of kids on the beach; the next she was rushing into the water to save three of them, but that rescue attempt ended in her death. Bay City News reports the unidentified 47-year-old woman was at Half Moon Bay's Cowell Ranch State Beach on Sunday with family when three children were swept away from shore by an undertow, per a San Mateo County Sheriff's spokeswoman. The would-be rescuer jumped into the surf but got caught up in the undertow herself, and while other beachgoers saved the three kids—it's not clear if they were part of the woman's group—they couldn't get to the woman. When her body eventually washed back to the beach, attempts to revive her were unsuccessful, the sheriff's rep says. (More drowning stories.)
