Kristen Stewart made a statement at Cannes on Monday under the gaze of photographers on the red carpet. The 28-year-old ditched her Louboutin heels and walked into the premiere of Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman in her bare feet, reports USA Today. Stewart has previously complained about the expectation that actresses wear heels on the carpet, which flared into a "Heelgate" controversy in 2015 when a female producer was turned away from a screening.
However, as Variety notes, Cannes does not have an actual rule stipulating that women must wear the fancy footwear. "Nobody is obligated to wear heels on the red carpet," festival director Thierry Femaux said in the wake of the 2015 controversy. "One of our agents screwed up, and we apologized right away." Still, as Stewart pointed out to the Hollywood Reporter in 2017, "People get very upset at you if you don't wear heels," adding, "If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me, either."
