Tensions flared Saturday at a vigil for Stephon Clark in Sacramento when a sheriff's vehicle knocked over a protester and drove off, the Sacramento Bee reports. The protester, Amanda Cleveland, lay motionless on the street until taken to hospital, and was later released with bruises on her head and arm. "The vehicle accelerated and struck her, accelerated very fast and struck her violently and she fell to the ground," says legal observer Guy Danilowitz, who shot video of the moment, per CNN. "It was a very fast acceleration, not the way you would move with people around." Cleveland called it a "hit and run" and said "if I did that I'd be charged. It's a disregard for human life."
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department confirmed the accident but said two of its vehicles were surrounded by demonstrators who were shouting and kicking. Channel 10 footage shows a crowd surrounding a vehicle as the deputy says "Back away from my vehicle" and sounds his siren; he slowly pulls away, but the second vehicle strikes Cleveland and leaves the scene. Several protesters later stood near the sheriff's station and chanted "hit and run" until a helicopter urged them to leave or face arrest, and they returned to the main demonstration. Protests have rocked Sacramento since Stephon Clark, 22, was shot by deputies who said he had a gun, but realized it was just a phone. (A private autopsy shows Clark was shot eight times, mostly from behind.)
