Norwegian Breaks Age Record With Alpine Win

At 35, Aksel Lund Svindal is an old man by the standards of Olympic Alpine skiing —but the Norwegian managed to win the men's downhill on Thursday, earning a place in the record books as the oldest skier to win Olympic gold, the AP reports. "That's probably my last Olympics, so it's a good thing I could be fast," he says. Svindal, one of his country's most beloved athletes, was 0.12 seconds faster than countryman Kjetil Jansrud and 0.18 seconds ahead of Swiss bronze medalist Beat Feuz. In other Pyeongchang news:

• Shiffrin scores her first gold. American skier Mikaela Shiffrin won the first of what could be several Pyeongchang golds with a win in giant slalom Thursday. She said that after coming fifth in Sochi in 2014, she set a goal of becoming the best in the world, CBS News reports.

• Radio host fired. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that KNBR has cut its ties with commentator Patrick Connor, who made lewd remarks about 17-year-old US snowboarding champ Chloe Kim. He described her as a "hot piece of ass" and said "the countdown is on" for her 18th birthday.
• Ghanaian makes history. An Olympic dream came true Wednesday for Akwasi Frimpong, the first Ghanaian to compete in the skeleton event, the BBC reports. He wore an eye-catching helmet showing a rabbit escaping a lion. "When the cage goes up, the rabbit has to run away from the lions otherwise it will get eaten," says Frimpong, who finished last in a field of 30.
• A "painful defeat" for Korea. The New York Times reports on the "most painful defeat" yet for the unified Korean's women's hockey team, which had already suffered shutout losses against Sweden and Switzerland. Fans were devastated after the team lost 4-1 to former colonial power Japan.
• Day 6 preview. The AP looks ahead to the events of Day 6, which will include men's figure skating at 8pm EST, the final skeleton heats, and plenty of Alpine skiing events—if the weather allows.
