President Trump used some charged language Monday to describe the way Democrats reacted to his State of the Union speech. While in Ohio to promote the new tax law, Trump recalled how Democrats sat in silence as he spoke of low unemployment among African-Americans and Latinos, reports NPR. Then came the charge: "Even on positive news—really positive news, like that—they were like death and un-American," Trump said. "Un-American. Somebody said treasonous. Yeah, I guess, why not? Can we call that treason? Why not? I mean, they certainly didn't seem to love our country very much." He added that Democrats would rather see him fail than the country do well.
Democratic Rep. Ron Beyer of Virginia later retorted that Trump didn't understand the term treason, reports the Hill. "He should study Article III of the United States Constitution, which he clearly hasn't read,” Beyer tweeted. For the record, it reads: “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort." Trump's speech on the tax bill was seen as a warm-up of sorts for the 2018 midterms, though Politico points out the danger for Republicans in pushing an economic message: At one point, CNN cut away from Trump's remarks to cover the tanking stock market.
