Rep. Joe Barton threatened to call the police on a former lover who contacted other women he was in relationships with and sent them explicit materials he had shared with her, according to a recording provided to the Washington Post. In the 2015 phone call, the Texas Republican tells the woman that he "should take all this crap to the Capitol Hill Police and have them launch an investigation." When she asks what he would tell them, Barton says he would let them know "that I had met you twice while married and had sex with you on two different occasions and that I exchanged inappropriate photographs and videos with you that I wouldn’t like to be seen made public, that you still apparently had all of those and were in position to use them in a way that would negatively affect my career."
The woman tells the Post that Barton first reached out to her in 2011 after she posted a message on his Facebook page. Barton 68, apologized Wednesday after a nude photo of him from an unknown source appeared on social media. After the Post report, he said he had accepted an offer from the Capitol Police to launch an investigation. He said the Dallas Morning News—which reported that he may be a victim under a "revenge porn" law Texas passed in 2015—"has identified a potential crime against me and the transcript referenced in the Washington Post may be evidence." He added that the woman "threatened to publicly share my private photographs and intimate correspondence in retaliation" after their consensual relationship ended. (More Joe Barton stories.)
