Cops: Couple Flew 8K Miles to Beat Son's Wife in Florida

Police in Florida say a couple from Punjab, India, flew what the BBC reports was 8,000 miles to Florida in order to help their son "counsel and discipline" his wife. The woman, Silky Gaind, was allegedly held captive—along with her 1-year-old daughter—and beaten by the trio. On Saturday she alerted her family in India of her situation by phone, and the Tampa Bay Times reports the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office was contacted by her parents. WFLA reports that a deputy's knocks at the couple's Riverview home went ignored, but he heard Gaind screaming for help and pushed his way in.

Police say the 33-year-old was found covered in bruises, and allege the beatings had "been ongoing for an extended period of time"; the BBC reports the in-laws had been there for about a month. Husband Devbir Kalsi has been charged with false imprisonment, felony battery, child abuse, and denying access to 911. Kalsi's father, Jasbir Kalsi, faces charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon; he allegedly held a knife to his daughter-in-law's throat. His wife, Bhupinder Kalsi, was charged with battery domestic violence and failure to report child abuse. During a Sunday court hearing, Bay News 9 reports Gaind said, "Last night he was telling me he was going to kill me if I call the police. ...
