Two sisters injured in Saturday's violence in Charlottesville, Va., are suing suspect James Alex Fields Jr., rally organizer Jason Kessler, and more than 20 alt-right and neo-Nazi groups for $3 million. In their lawsuit, Micah and Tadrint Washington say they were injured when Fields plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters, Reuters reports. The sisters say they weren't involved in the demonstrations but were on their way home from visiting a friend when Fields' car slammed into theirs. They say some of his pedestrian victims were flipped onto their car, leaving it spattered with blood. Nineteen people were injured and Heather Heyer, 32, was killed.
The sisters' lawsuit accuses Fields of trying to kill and maim as many people as possible—and accuses the rally organizers and attendees of inciting violence. Attorney Timothy Litzenburg tells the Washington Post that the "Unite the Right" organizers conspired to "inspire mayhem, homicide, and violence." "We want the people who incited this catastrophe to sit in a courtroom and face a jury of normal Charlottesville citizens," he says. "That jury can decide what it is that they owe to the citizens of this city." (A police officer is being investigated for joking about the incident.)
