Selfie-Taker Survives Fall From Bridge
The Placer County Sheriff's Department tweeted the dangers of selfie-taking on the bridge.   (Twitter )

A woman taking a selfie survived a 60-foot fall off California's highest bridge in what cops say is a distressing trend. The unidentified woman was walking on the Foresthill Bridge's steel girders with a group of six friends on Tuesday when tried to snap a shot and tumbled backward to the trail below, CNN reports. She was airlifted to a Sacramento-area hospital and is miraculously expected to survive. A friend told KOVR the woman was knocked unconscious, her arm was deeply gashed, and she will need surgery on bones that were fractured. "This young lady is very lucky to be alive," the Placer County Sheriff's Department wrote on Facebook. They note that the catwalk underneath the bridge's pedestrian walkway is closed to the public "for the protection of our residents and our community."

Although it is considered trespassing, thrill-seekers haven't stopped flocking to the underbelly of the bridge, which is 730 feet tall at its highest point, the fourth-tallest in the US. They post their scary shots to Instagram and other sites, racking up likes. "You can lose your life and none of that is worth a selfie!" the sheriff's department tweeted. Dozens of people have been arrested in the off-limits zone in recent years, KCRA reports. "One misstep and there is no surviving a 730-foot fall," a sheriff's rep said after a spate of arrests in 2015. "We really want this to stop before someone dies." The selfie stunt craze killed at least 127 people around the world between 2014 and the first eight months of 2016, per the BBC, prompting some landmarks to ban selfie sticks or even selfies entirely. (A Snapchat stunt ended in a teen's death.)
