The family of a slain nurse in Nashville is asking the public for help finding her killer. Tiffany Ferguson, 23, was fatally stabbed in her apartment early Tuesday during a robbery, police say. Her roommate heard her screams about 5:40am and found her injured in bed, the Tennessean reports. Police are searching for a man spotted on surveillance video walking outside the apartment prior to the assault. Wearing a hoodie and ripped jeans, the man can be seen pulling on door handles of cars shortly before Ferguson was attacked, police say. The young nurse had been out with friends earlier in the evening, and a police spokesman tells ABC News the crime is believed to be "a very rare, random act of violence."

Cops think the suspect entered the building looking for unlocked apartment doors, was able to access Ferguson's apartment, took some valuables and put them outside, and then returned to the apartment. "The attack on Ferguson is believed to have come during his reentry," police say. Police recovered a "very sharp object," and are awaiting autopsy results. Molly Cox tells ABC that her sister was having trouble with the lock, which is likely why her door was unlocked. Ferguson got a job as an intensive-care nurse at a Nashville hospital after attending college in Alabama. "She just had so many dreams," says her sister. "She deserved better than what she got."
